Unfinished by Susan Roberts

September 7th - 28th 2024

Susan Roberts M.A. is a sculptor and painter who has been showing work around Wales and various parts of the world for many years. These include Austria, Germany, America and Australia. But this is her first show in Neath despite the fact that she has close ties with the town. Her husband’s family are from Neath so she has been a regular visitor over the years. She grew up in the Far East, Canada and America but has lived in Wales for the last 40 years. She taught life drawing and portraiture in Cardiff for many years, whilst continuing her own practice in sculpture, and bringing up her family of 5 children with her husband.

Her work is mainly about what it is to be a woman. Her sculptures express emotions through their twisting forms and their tactile surface texture. Smooth and rough surfaces invite us to touch or sometimes repel us. Her works are often about the ageing progress, feelings, emotions and the stresses and strains on the body. She works in many mediums such as plaster, iron, bronze, alabaster, and stone.

Susan also produces pairs of sculptures in order to talk about human relationships. She deals with universal themes such as innocence, desire, fear, and hope through body shape and language.

Whilst mainly a sculptor, Susan also paints, often producing large works of single figures and figures linked by a theme.  She uses photography, makes films and creates ceramics.
