ARTISTS / Suzanne Callen

Suzanne Callen is a figurative painter who lives and works in Swansea. Suzanne began painting in 2021 and works in the medium of oil, in doing so she has developed a body of work that is cohesive, mindful and considered which conveys strength and empowerment through solitudinous decision-making, and works regularly with her muse Nasim.

She started her career as a sculptor, using the three dimensional to explore figurative form and further grew creatively working digitally gaining a Masters in Animation which has informed her passion for the contextual relationship of design. Additionally, Suzanne also spent over ten years teaching Film/TV and Animation, with both being influential in the conveyance of ideas and storytelling through composition, lighting and the frame ratio.  These different areas of creative expression have been significant in her development in that she aims to convey an element of ‘ebb and flow’ in all work, through the utilisation of different tempos within the painting that is created through brushstroke, composition and colour, engaging with elements of detail and expressionist techniques. Suzanne works with a limited palette, based on those used by the Italian masters, with pigment mixing an intrinsic and mindful part of the working process. As an artist she has developed a particular relationship with oil-based media which melds layering with additive and subtractive application and time.

Suzanne won the Swansea Open in 2021, was 'Highly Commended' in Swansea Open 2022, and has had work exhibited in Wells Contemporary 2024, Royal Society of Oil Painters 2024, was awarded 'Highly Commended' at the RCA (Royal Cambrian Academy) 2025 and also has work selected for Wales Contemporary 2025 exhibiting in London and across Wales.
