ARTIST / Rhiannon Collins

As someone who is hugely excited by all things natural I am drawn to seascapes, landscapes and floral studies. I usually start a piece of work en plein air with my sketchbook come rain or shine. Working outside I feel more able to absorb the sense, and atmosphere of a location, making my process a more intuitive reaction to my surroundings as much as the subject. I tend to focus on something with lots of interest in the foreground, and am quite detail obsessed.

My love of experimenting with mixed media and diversity of mark making means i can build layers of colour and texture. Why stick to one medium when you can use 5! This can include gesso as a base, sgraffito, wax resist, ink, collage, and acrylic paint. The final stage of my process is usually to add scribbled line work.

I love experimenting with different techniques and am constantly striving to create work that has movement and life while retaining some realism. Being an artist for me is a compulsion, and a constant battle to get it ‘right’. I draw or paint every day.
