Artist in the Spotlight: Julie Brunskill

Julie was born in the north-east of England and trained at Cleveland College of Art between 1976 and 1981.

Moving to Wales in 1983 she soon became a member of the Swansea Branch of the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales. Julie acted as Publicity Officer, Steering Group member and part-time Gallery Attendant in the artist run Swansea Arts Workshop Gallery for several years. She established a studio in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter in 1986 until moving to a purpose-built studio at her home in 2005.

Julie has had numerous exhibitions in Wales and other parts of Britain and Ireland. She has also completed several public and private commissions - the largest public commissions were for the Hastings Hotel Group in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1991 and ’92.

In 2004 she took a course in paper clay and paper making with the late Carol Farrow in Lherm, France and has since incorporated paper clay into her ceramic forms.

In 2010 she formed a partnership with Alastair Duncan and has worked with him as a visual artist on several StillWalks® projects.

Julie was awarded an Arts Council of Wales grant in 2015 to produce a new body of work for her Maker in Focus exhibition in Mission Gallery in 2016.

‘Julie graduated from UWTSD in 2019 with an MA, Fine Art Contemporary Dialogues.’
