ARTISTS / Deb Chapman

Born in a small mining village in the South Wales valleys in the 1950's and after careers in the public, private and third sectors I am now a semi-retired, primarily self-taught emerging artist. I have worked collaboratively with an established professional artist.

I draw from the Celtic Monastic heritage in Wales, particularly their spirituality and love of creation. My work is very intuitive at the start, a playful exploration of marks, colours etc until I find something that I can work with or I have a sense of what the painting is. It is more of an 'inside to outside' approach and brings with it the cumulative experiences of walking the landscape in which I live, favourite places, life and whatever is going on for me at the time. I keep working until I feel I need to stand back and review what's working, what's not and edit checking composition, colour, contrast, tone etc. The foundation of this approach is mark making, very loose and flowing.

I have been involved in solo and group exhibitions across South Wales over the last few years and a solo exhibition at the Senedd Cymru in 2018. I have also collaborated with other artists in Coastal Arts Trails in 2023 and 2024 and Studio exhibitions with other artists.
